Retaining quality leaders in Kansas schools deeply influences student learning and school culture. National statistics state that 25,000 principals leave their schools yearly, disrupting progress and improvement, at high cost to the district. The job of leading schools today is complex, and new leaders, eager to meet current day challenges, must receive continued support as they move from preparation programs to on-the-job realities. Tenacious and sustained leadership can set the course for effective change. Districts must invest in professional development, meaningful networking, and mentoring for new leaders. Mentors must focus on instruction, be carefully matched, receive high quality training, and deliver individualized and contextual support. The Kansas Educational Leadership Institute (KELI) is providing “Kansans Can” support to new leaders in Kansas. This session will provide information about addressing turnover in leadership positions and how one state model is supporting leadership development in Kansas.
